Title: East vs West Champion
Post by: Mitchell Baker on Fri, 09/21/12, 08:19 AM
Ever since I have been involved with USSMA there has been those who think the moving of the championship every year is bad... some say good.. We have a flux in membership and even qualifiers based on which coast the championship event is located.  Several years ago, we had talked about starting a points system based on several things... scores at qualifiers or course, but bonuses for multiple qualifiers, and attending the National Championships.  Awards would be given for east and west points winner.  I am not one that believes the championships can be at a single location, at this time.  To much overhead in putting it on.  It will be really hard to get a club or group of people to organize and plan the event.  We rely on local clubs to do a good bit of the leg work in the local area.  Remember as a non-profit and our "charter" is to prompt the education of scale aeromodeling.  I believe a big part of that is the champs moving around to different locations giving local audiences exposure to what we do.

Now back to what I really wanted to talk about.  I do believe a points system could help participation in qualifiers and the champs.  Also keep people and qualifiers "joined" from year to year.

Points for an event would be based on score (normalized or raw, does not matter)
Bonus for placement
Bonus for multiple qualifiers
Bonus for attending the Champs
Awarded after the champs

See how something like that works before you go and try to add two more large events on each coast and try to find logistical support for.

Good points to start into trying to get this side of the coast involved again. Past clubs that I been in I gave a shot at trying to get a more organized event run (Qualifier) but as it always turns into a challenge as in the club members to get involved and expense they were willing to give into - the final outcome was always understandable. Now if some new ideas are brought into view of the past Clubs who held Qualifiers hopefully it sparks a return.
